National Parks in the Digital Age

October 29, 2009

cell phoneBluetooth, BlackBerry, iPhone, cell phones, Wi-Fi services…the list goes on and on of new technologies that help us connect with the world around us. Keeping in step with the constantly evolving  Digital Age, many national parks are offering their visitors new experiences through these technologies. On Hawai’i Island, three parks have begun offering “Cell Phone Audio Tours”: Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. These tours allow visitors the convenience of being able to receive high-quality ranger-led tours of these parks, day and night.

Visitors to Pu’ukohola Heiau NHS can spend 30 minutes on a guided tour of the Park’s many historic features. At Hawaii Volcanoes NP, visitors gain insights into such popular Park destinations as: Devastation Trail, Kilauea Iki, the Sulphur Banks and the Chain of Craters Road. While at Kaloko-Honokohau NHP, visitors learn about the Park’s petroglyphs, fishponds and rare wildlife. One of the great advantages of these Cell Phone Audio Tours is that you have choices; you can choose what you listen to, how long your tour will last and when you want to take a tour.

There are several ways you can take advantage of these wonderful programs

  1. Visit the Parks in person and listen to the tours on your cell phone.
  2. Call the tour numbers from home (Remember: you don’t even have to use a cell phone!) Hawaii Volcanoes NP (808) 217-9285, Kaloko-Honokohau NHP (808) 217-9065, & Pu’ukohola Heiau NHS (808) 206-7056
