A long slow journey: the snails’ story
November 5, 2009

Little by little a huge group of snails migrates back upstream.
Juvenile snails (hihiwai) were seen migrating upstream in lines of hundreds to thousands of individuals in Waikolu stream in Kalaupapa National Historical Park. This unusual event occurred in June as part of a life cycle somewhat similar to salmon. Snail eggs hatch in the stream, wash down to the ocean, then the young snails migrate back into the streams, form a shell, and travel upstream over waterfalls and other barriers to complete their life cycle.
