Hawaiian Cultural Education Festival for Fourth graders

November 9, 2009

Every year in November, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park hosts a cultural festival for fourth graders from West Hawaii.  Over two days, 500 children attend the park and participate in Hawaiian games, weaving, net throwing and other cultural activities.  They learn about voyaging  and canoes and how to make Hawaiian crafts. The festival is held during  the season of the Makahiki, an important time in old Hawaii that celebrated peace and the harvest from the land.  This year the theme is ‘Wai’ (Water) and it will be held at ‘Aio’pio fishtrap on November 12th and 13th.
