Pu’ukohola Heiau Talk Story Program
On Saturday, November 21, Park Ranger Mokihana Keoho continued Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site’s “Talk Story Program” with a variety of guest speakers and musicians from around Hawai’i Island. National Park Service archeologist Mary Jane Wright talked to visitors about her experiences being a member of the Park’s Earthquake Repair Team, how archeology is helping broaden our understanding of Hawaiian history and culture and what it is like to be an “outsider” in such a culturally significant park.
In the true spirit of Hawaiian “talk story”, brother and sister J.R. and Kehau Akau made an impromptu entrance into the program, delighting Park visitors with their singing, J.R.’s ukulele playing and Kehau’s hula dancing. These siblings are descendants of Isaac Davis, who was a trusted advisor to Kamehameha the Great from 1790-1810. Auntie Annie and Uncle Bill Akau, who also attended October’s program, added to the lively discussions throughout the afternoon.
Visitors from as far away as Canada and Texas joined in on the talk story, asking questions and giving their own impressions of Hawai’i. If you would like to join us for our next Talk Story, check our Calendar of Events for dates and information.
