Waterspout sighted at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park

December 22, 2009

The photos below were taken by Park Ranger Lisa Nelson at Hale Ho’okipa (Visitor Center) at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park on the Island of Hawai’i on Sunday, Dec. 20. This storm produced very heavy rain, hail and high winds. The Park was closed for two hours as the storm passed over the Kona Coast. Although severe weather is fairly uncommon in Hawai’i, winter is the rainy season and the time for “Kona” storms to affect the leeward (west) side of Hawai’i Island.  Waterspout forming off of Kaloko-Honokohau NHP.
