Summer Children’s Program Weaves Fun, Nature, and Culture Together! by Mardie Lane
January 7, 2010
Youngsters from 8 to 12 years old are invited to join park rangers in a fun-filled, 3-day exploration of two national parks —Hawai‘i Volcanoes and Pu‘ukohola Heiau. The program is set for June 15, 16, and 17, 2010 from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm daily. “We look to encourage a child’s appreciation for that which is uniquely Hawaiian,” said Park Ranger Joni Mae Makuakane-Jarrell. The children will hike beneath towering tree ferns and over fields of ropy pahoehoe. They’ll feel the steam and catch a glimpse of Hawai‘i’s rare birds. They’ll learn an oli (chant) and how to play a song on a ukulele, run a Recycle Relay Race, and create their own Hawaiian print t-shirt.Participants should be able to carry a day pack with water, snacks, lunch, and raingear, and hike up to three miles at a leisurely pace. For more information or to register your child for the program, call the park’s Education Center at
(808) 985-6019 or email Holly Linneman at holly_linneman@nps.gov.
