High Temperature Resistant Corals in American Samoa

February 26, 2010

An intensive water quality monitoring project in Ofu lagoon in the National Park of American Samoa was initiated to understand the environmental conditions around the high temperature resistant corals within the lagoon. These unique coral communities withstand large temperature fluctuations and stay healthy compared to most coral colonies that can rapidly succumb to bleaching and disease when the sea water warms. Rising sea surface temperatures are occurring globally; a pattern expected to continue with climate change. A better understanding of how corals can adapt to warmer water temperatures could offer insights into reef response and restoration possibilities as park managers cope with climate change.

Can these corals teach us something about climate change?
