A Girl on a Mission
When 14-year old Chandler Johnson walks into a National Park, the park rangers know she means business. Sporting a vest containing dozens and dozens of Junior Ranger badges and patches from all over the United States and Canada, this junior ranger is on a mission. When this Georgia native stopped in to Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site this week, she had already visited over 300 other parks around the United States, including three other parks on Hawaii Island.
She said that her mission to visit all of the national parks began at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in Colorado, where she completed her first “Junior Ranger” program. Since then, her family has visited national parks in 49 states and several territories. After visiting Hawaii, her family’s next adventure will take them to Alaska. Both Chandler and her family said that the junior ranger programs are wonderful and that they have had lots of fun together exploring America’s national parks because of these programs.
