“Remember” May 29, 2010 Pacific Island Heritage Word of the Day
Within the 11 National Park sites of the Pacific Islands are two memorials and two comemoration sites- American Memorial on Saipan, U.S.S. Arizona Memorial on Oahu, now part of World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, and War in the Pacific on Guam. Yet, all were touched by WWII.
From an historical prospective ,one can chronical the events and facts of the Pacific Theater of WWII- Click here http://www.nps.gov/archive/wapa/indepth/sections/pacificTheater.htm for such an account.
However, this fails to capture the depth of the human experience commemorated in these sites. It is telling that it is not only the United States and Allied forces are honored here, but all who participated in the struggle.
With time, hate has transformed into empathy, perhaps this is the real lesson of these memorials.
