Hours Later, Tsunami Effects Still Being Seen in Hawaii
March 11, 2011

People who have worked here at Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site for years have never seen this before...this photo taken just minutes ago (3:00pm HST) shows the ocean receding and exposing reef and rocks far out into the ocean.

Just a couple minutes later the ocean has come in covering up the exposed rocks and reefs and heading further inland than a normal high tide. Though the main waves hit 12 hours ago, the ocean is still reacting to violent energy release of the Japan earthquake.

Was there any sign of Hale o Kapuni Heiau when the water drew down, or does it seem like that structure has pretty much been destroyed at this point? I remember seeing a photo taken during an earlier tsunami that might have shown it.
I would imagine that some of the rocks that you can see in the photo would have at one time made up Hale o Kapuni Heiau…but at this point it’s more of a guess. Pretty amazing to see…1st time something like that has been recorded since the 50′s. Aloha!
Is there any information on how the Tsunami has affected the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch? I just won my fourth grade Science Experiment today on the Garbage Patch, and I am very interested in any new information that I can find. Thank you.
Congratulations! I’m not for sure if anyone has any information on this…but if I find any, I will let you know. Aloha!
Thank you!
