Seeds, Nuts and Feathers

Beautiful leis made of seeds, nuts and feathers on display this morning at Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site on Hawaii Island.
Well it’s that time of year again at Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site! From April to August, Mabel Tolentino of the Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club demonstrates how very common items can be turned into beautiful leis. “Aunty” Mabel and the folks with the Civic Club were instrumental in the forming of this national park unit back in the early 1970′s. Since then, she enjoys sharing her skill and knowledge with visitors from around the world. She often tells visitors that when they return home to look for items in their area that they could weave into leis. If you would like to meet Aunty Mabel, she will be at Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site most Fridays from now till the park’s Hawaiian Cultural Festivalon August 11-12.
