Ho‘oku‘ikahi-Stand Tall Together! Unite!
It is fitting that the birth place of the Hawaiian Monarchy In the 18th century at Pu`ukohola Heiau is the site for its ongoing renaissance in the 21st century. Ranger Greg talks about unifying all the Hawaiian Islands under one ruler- Kamehameha the Great, and his legacy at Pu’ukohola Heiau. He also discusses the re-birth of the long suppressed Hawaiian cultural pride- and the role the Heiau plays as a symbol of unity, purpose, and cooperation.
Each year the Heiau hosts a week long celebration of Hawaiian culture. Ceremonies, workshops, crafting, and language lessons culminate at the sunrise ceremony and “mock Battle” at the Heiau. Afterwards is a cultural festival open to the public in which many aspects of the previous week are recreated so the general public can understand the issues and ideas surrounding Pu’ukohola Heiau and its powerful message of re-unification.
