You Won’t See this at the Olympics!

August 10, 2012

The following are photos and videos taken this morning at Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site on the Big Island of Hawaii. Teams of Hawaiian warriors are competing for tomorrow’s Hawaiian Cultural Festival. In one of the videos you will see someone going for a large banana stump. This banana stump symbolizes the first “kill” in the battle and the teams “fight” to retrieve it back to their side. Enjoy!

Even though they have the spear tips covered, you know it still hurts when you get hit! (NPS)

Warriors hurl spears at one another with the goal of “capturing” the banana stump in the middle of the field. (NPS)
