Slack Key Saturday
The sounds of old Hawaii came to Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site today as the park hosted Grammy-nominated slack key guitarist Donald Kauli’a to share in a day of music and “talk story.” In addition to sharing some of his musical talents, he also shared about the unique cultural origins of Hawaii’s musical heritage. Visitors, some with no guitar experience at all, had the exciting opportunity to learn some of the basics of Hawaiian slack key from one of the genre’s masters.
This event is the second and what will be weekly cultural demonstrations presented by the Royal Order of Kamehameha at the park. On Thursday, February 14, join musician Sonny Lim at the park for another hands-on opportunity to connect with Hawaii’s unique musical heritage.
