Welcome to National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2013! Throughout the month of May, the National Parks of the Pacific Islands are going to share an audio podcast called: “The Pacific Island Heritage Word of the Day.” Be sure to listen to today’s podcast below!!!

In Maui, it is possible to hear a person with a Portuguese last name speaking Japanese to a Hawaiian/Chinese person at a Filipino restaurant that serves spam and rice. The many cultures that mixed together in the sugar fields and the ranches of Maui created a unique sense of identity. These same people worked and played in lands that would eventually become Haleakala National Park. They were and remain some of the park’s best advocates and supporters.
