Kamehameha the Great

Kamehameha the Great

On this day in 1819, Kamehameha the Great died in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Today, Ranger Greg will talk about Kamehameha the Great in the Pacific Island Heritage Word of the Day from Pu`ukohola Heiau National Historic Site on the Island of Hawaii.

A shrewd and powerful leader, Kamehameha takes his name from “the lonly one”  or the one without peer. The first ali’i nui (great chief) to eventually unite all the Hawaiian Islands under one rule, Kamehameha’s storey is complex and compelling. All of the National Parks in Hawaii have connections to Kamehameha.Click Here–>Kamehmeha
