Ki’i or images denote a special place with specific kapu on it.

Listen to the late Ranger Tom has he talks about the Hawaiian concept of Kapu. The word is related to the Polynesian word we often use in English…Taboo. Kapu is not just “forbidden” or “off limits.” It is a whole system of laws that governed Hawai`i  and its people for hundreds of years.
