Hapai Pohaku “Rock Stars”
In 2013, Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail obtained funding from the National Park Service (NPS) to undertake a stabilization project for sections of the trail that were damaged by the 2006 Hawaii earthquake. The current NPS stone masonry crew is part of the Hawaiian Legacy Program which was founded to preserve knowledge of traditional building methods and crafts and to provide opportunities for experienced NPS staff to work with and train the next generation.
A series of videos will be posted periodically to Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail’s official facebook page if you want follow the progress of their experiences through the summer. The banner, Hapai Pohaku “Rock Stars” Hawaiian Legacy Program, will alert you about an upcoming video clip.
