Watch out for ‘Ua‘u

August 21, 2013

‘Ua‘u spend most of their life at sea and are not often seen in the park. This endangered bird nests above 8,000’ in the summit district of Haleakalā, sometimes near park roads. Please drive carefully and look out for the ‘ua‘u as headlights and street lights can confuse their night time navigation. Park staff found this ‘ua‘u in the middle of the park road last week.

‘Ua‘u can often be heard when visiting or camping in the wilderness area at night. Have you heard their call?
