He’e there

August 11, 2014

A day octopus (Octopus cyanea) moves among the corals. Photo by Sylvester Lee.

Occasionally when an NPS scientist pokes around with a camera, they come across a gem of a photo.

Here, an octopus (he’e in Hawaiian) is attempting to blend in to the reef at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. Every year, divers from the NPS Inventory and Monitoring program capture and analyze literally hundreds of photos of the seafloor at Kalaupapa NHP to keep tabs on the health of the ecosystem.

Look for more amazing photos on the blog soon.
