Hokule’a and Hikianalia Arrival in American Samoa

August 21, 2014

The Hokule’a and Hikianalia voyaging canoes visited the Manu’a Islands yesterday. After stopping by Faleasao village, the canoes came to Olosega and Ofu island where local alia boats and the National Park Service’s M/V Moana met them at Leaumasili Point and escorted them to Ofu Harbor. Many greetings, gifts, stories, and knowledge were exchanged before we said goodbye. M/V Moana towed the Hokule’a out to sea and the crew began to sing. We released the tow rope and watched the canoes sail toward the setting sun. It was a very special day for everyone.

The canoes continued on overnight and just sailed into Pago Pago Harbor. Welcoming ceremonies and festivities will greet the crews for their visit in American Samoa.

During their visits, the national park will work with the crews for a variety of community and educational efforts.
