Preparing for Take-off!

December 18, 2014

A young endangered Hawaiian Petrel or ῾ua῾u exercises its wings in preparation for fledging, while Halema‘uma‘u glows in the distance. At about 4 months of age, the young seabirds take their first flight from the subalpine slopes of Mauna Loa and head directly out to the ocean. ῾Ua῾u that survive the challenges of their early years at sea will eventually return to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park to nest. Good luck to the fledglings of 2014 – hope to see you back in 2020!
